New Deal For GM Oshawa and St. Catharines

General Motors Canada and its main union, UNIFOR, have announced an agreement that will bring $1.3 billion dollars of investment to restart assembly at the company’s Oshawa plant.   And UNIFOR president Jerry Dias says it will secure jobs at GM’s St Catharines plant on Glendale Avenue with a $109 million investment, where engines and transmissions will be made for an expanded variety of vehicles. The plant currently employs almost 1,200 people

Retooling of the Oshawa plant is expected to begin once the new contract is ratified by union members.  The vote is set for this weekend.    Assuming approval, Jerry Dias says production of GM’s Silverado and Sierra trucks will begin at the Oshawa plant in early 2022.  It’s expected that 1,400 to 1,700 people will be hired as a result.

The GM Oshawa plant ceased auto assembly last December, but maintained parts production and research with a much smaller workforce.

Dias also confirmed that none of the new vehicles that will be made in Oshawa will be electric, unlike commitments made by Ford and Fiat Chrysler.
