The City of Hamilton is putting a pause on its mandatory vaccination policy following a report from the city’s medical officer of health.

Members of the general issues committee approved a motion to exempt new city employees from mandatory COVID-19 vaccination by a vote of 11-3.

Councillor Esther Pauls has been a long-time opponent of the mandate, arguing that people should not have to choose between their job or jab. Pauls says the move will help address the city’s ongoing staffing challenges.

Over the last several years, the vaccine policy has been a contentious issue at city hall.

Councillor Cameron Kroetsch was one of the members who voted against the pause, noting that the report says encouraging vaccine uptake is still an important part of the fight against the virus.

During the meeting, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath praised the manner in which the decision to pause the mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy was made, highlighting the council’s ability to work together in a respectful way.
