A ceremony will be held in Hamilton as today marks the National Day of Mourning to remember and honour those who have been killed or injured in the workplace.
The ceremony will be held at the corner of Main and Bay streets near City Hall. It begins at 11 a.m. and a moment of silence will be observed across the country.
April 28 also aims for governments and workplaces to commit to protecting workers and avoiding workplace tragedies.
The latest stats reveal that in 2021, there were 1,081 workplace fatalities recorded in Canada and over 277,000 claims of workplace injury, which includes 18 deaths of workers ages 15 to 24.
On average, three workers die each day.
The Provincial Ministry of Labour launched an investigation into National Steel Car after a worker’s death last year in Hamilton. Three workers have died at the plant since 2020.
Ceremonies will be held across the Golden Horseshoe, including St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Brantford.
