Paul Bernardo, Canada’s most notorious murderer and rapist has applied for day parole. The preliminary hearing is set for next March. Bernardo was sentenced to life in prison for raping more than a dozen women and torturing and killing teens Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French.
“I am of the firm belief that Paul Bernardo has no chance of getting parole now or anytime in the future.” Tim Danson represents the French and Mahaffy families. Bernardo has applied for day parole before but the dates have always been adjourned.
The families have been asked to write victim impact statements just incase Bernardo ever makes it before the parole board, something he can keep applying for.
“It’s an enormous burden on victims and one that we are advocating for legislative change it’s not necessary for people like Paul Bernardo and it’s unfair to put the victims and public through this on an annual basis.”
Day parole would allow Bernardo to leave the prison during set times and participate in community activities, under the condition of returning at night. Bernardo is considered a dangerous offender, that designation is given to anyone deemed of a particularly dangerous or violent nature. What this means is that in order for Bernardo to even be considered for parole he would have to present medical evidence to meet the criteria for the designation to be lifted. But Danson says Bernardo probably won’t even get support from his own case management team which means he has no chance of being paroled.
