An update on a young boy who was born with a genetic disorder that prevented his skull from forming properly. We first introduced you to Maksim Petrilli last November, in February, Maksim underwent a lengthy surgery to correct his bone structure. Today he is wearing a halo device that helped adjust his face, forehead and upper jaw.
“We’ve been turning it by half a mm in the morning and again in evening, finished the process now, it has actually come out by 26.5 mm.” Melissa Petrilli, Maksim’s mom.
Obviously the way he looks now is the biggest difference but his parents say that’s not why they did the surgery.
“It’s helped him in so many ways, created more space for his brain to grow relieving pressure, protecting his eyes.”
He was born with pfeiffer syndrome, a genetic disorder that prevented his skull and face from forming properly and because of that he’s developmentally delayed.
The halo device will be removed by June and his parents are hoping that his facial bones stay lined up this way as he grows. If his newly constructed face doesn’t continue to grow properly, Maksim will need another surgery when he’s older. He’s had 19 different operations already.
