You can call him ‘Dr’ Red Green

First Published:

The creator of Red Green received an honorary degree at McMaster University’s spring convocation Monday afternoon.

Canadian humourist Steve Smith is the writer and actor behind “The Red Green Show”, which was produced at CHCH for its first few seasons. It ran for 15 years and is still shown in reruns.

Smith addressed Humanities and Arts & Science grads at the Hamilton Place ceremony. “The irony is I actually enrolled in Mac in fall of 1968 and at Christmas in 1969, I dropped out thinking ‘there’s got to be an easier way to get a degree. Obviously I was correct.”

“I’m not sure this degree has any practical application. I dreamt the other night that I was at a theatre and the announcer came over the PA and said ‘we have a member in audience faking an illness, is there an honourary doctor in the house?'”

Smith received a Doctor of Letters degree.

This year, McMaster is also honouring former prime minister Paul Martin, and former president of the Canadian Auto Workers, Buzz Hargrove.
