The Canadian Union of Public Employees announced that they are suing the provincial government over it’s sell-off of Hydro One shares to private companies. The union which represents 260 000 workers in various fields from education to healthcare says the government isn’t listening to the current owners of Hydro One, the public.

According to CUPE President Fred Hahn, selling 60% of publicly owned Hydro One is wrong and his union had no other choice but to take the government to court. The lawsuit will focus on the Liberal’s “cash-for-access” fundraisers where bankers in attendance also just so happened to make a profit from the hydro sales. The province has made about $1.7 billion in selling the first 30% of Hydro One. The government have since proposed a ban on MPP’s from attending such events.

In the early 2000’s several unions took the Progressive Conservatives to court and blocked their attempt to sell off Hydro One. CUPE is confident they can do it again. The Liberals believe they can sell off the remaining third of shares of Hydro One by 2018 and CUPE believes they can accomplish their goal of stopping the sell off before then. The lawsuit is expected to be filed in November.
