A disturbing climb in pedestrian related fatalities, this time in the Niagara area. One woman is dead and another is fighting for her life after being hit by a minivan Tuesday night.
Friends and family have identified one of the victims as Flavie Grenier. The 71-year-old Welland resident, who died at the intersection of Wellington street and Tanguay was crossing with her friend when she was hit. Her friend, a 59-year-old Welland woman was taken to hospital in critical condition where she remains. The driver, who was making a left onto Tanguay was not injured in the crash. Investigators say they’re looking at a number of factors including speed but have ruled out alcohol.
Neighbours say the street light at the intersection was off at the time of the crash, police say they are aware of it and considering it a factor in their investigation. Neighbours say the light had been out for sometime making it dangerous at night.
