Woman seriously injured in St. Catharines assault

A St. Catharines woman was rushed to hospital overnight after being assaulted in the city’s north end.

Niagara police were called to a home in the area of Garnet St. and Niagara St. around midnight Wednesday.

A 41-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but has since been released.

No arrests have been made in connection with the assault but a grey Volkswagen Jetta was seized by police about three kilometers away from the scene, on Centre St. between Academy and Court streets.

Niagara police Cst. Phil Gavin says investigators have applied for a search warrant for the scene and the vehicle.

No suspect descriptions have been released at this time.

Detectives are conducting interviews with the victim and witnesses.

Police believe the incident was targeted. “We believe this is an isolated incident that does not pose an immediate threat to public safety,” said police in a news release.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have been in the area of the assault and where the car was located between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to review any surveillance or dashcam footage and contact police at 905-688-4111, ext 9531.
