Why the new year is a good time for a med review

First Published:

The new year is a great time for a med review, and to help explain we were joined by Mednow pharmacist Maya Hamam.

A med review is when you gather all of the medication you take, whether it be prescription or over the counter, then you bring them to a professional who will consider how all your medications are interacting.

Hamam says Mednow is taking a look at people’s medications to check for side effects people may be experiencing and the effects of how all the medications are interacting. She says Mednow will sometimes recommend that people change a different medication or even remove a medication.

“50 per cent of Canadians with chronic conditions actually don’t take their medications correctly,” said Hamam. “As pharmacists, we know the implications of that.”

Mednow is an online pharmacy founded in Toronto by pharmacists who are on a mission to improve access to care for all Canadians, through digitizing the pharmacy.

The Mednow platform provides access to pharmacists, doctors and health care expertise helping clients skip long waits, hassles and avoid medication mix ups. It also offers free prescription delivery, right to your doorstep, often same day for free.

Hamam says aging Canadians and anyone who could be taking multiple medications multiple times a day, uses multiple over the counter drugs and those who take higher risk medications should consider doing a med review.
