According to his former lawyer, 24-year-old Aaron Driver was a loner and passive in nature. Driver was born to a Christian family in Saskatchewan. His family worked in the military and he often moved around the country.

He popped up on RCMP’s radar in late 2014 after they received a complaint about comments Driver was making on Twitter. He was living in Winnipeg at the time and went by the online name Harun Abdurahman. He had a network of friends worldwide fighting for ISIS both on the ground and online.

In May 2015 RCMP say Driver was talking in a group chat with well known ISIS members. They say he was associated with Elton Simpson, the man involved in an attempted terror attack in Texas.

“A few hours before the attack Mr. Simpson sent a message on Twitter to Mr. Driver and six other individuals.”

A month later RCMP arrested Driver at his Winnipeg home. They seized computer equipment where they found instructions for building a homemade bomb. Just nine days later Driver was released on bail with strict conditions which included wearing a GPS monitoring device and staying off the internet.

Early this year his case was settled under a peace bond, which still prohibited him from using a computer or cell phones and he was to live with his sister in Strathroy. Those rules were to stay in place until the end of this month.

RCMP say they don’t have any information that would suggest Driver was working with anyone else in the foiled attack.
