Canada’s unemployment rate may be under 7%, but that doesn’t mean getting a job is easy. These days millennials are finding it hard to find work. Statistics Canada says there are 6 to 7 million Canadians aged 18 to 30, and sending mass emails to employers to find a job may not necessarily be the best way to find work.

Dave Wilkins, founder of the website tenthousandcoffees.com, says the last place you should look are online postings. “About 85% of jobs aren’t posted publically, yet 100% of students and recent graduate’s time is spent going and submitting resumes that are posted publically.”

That’s why Wilkins created tenthousandcoffees.com, it’s not a job-posting site, but a vehicle to connect like-minded young people and industry pros to share their ideas.

“You can browse thousands of profiles from different industries, interest groups and then when you review someone’s profile you find out a little bit about what they’re interested in talking about” says Wilkins.

Once a coffee request is made, you fill out a questionarre, and the answers are sent directly to the industry professional for review. Tarif Rahman credits this process for leading to his career. “Even if you meet with just one industry professional, sure you might not get hired but they’ll lead you to someone else. Building those relationships and leading you down the right path is essential in this job market.” Rahman explains.

Tenthousandcoffees.com makes life easier for employers too. Sonya Singh of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel describes the employers perspective: “if i’m able to look at your profile that essentially answers questions that I’ve asked I can send you to me and talk to you or send you to someone who I think would be a better mentor.”

So, if the stress of finding a job is getting you down, perhaps it’s time to take a coffee break.
