Water levels in Lake Ontario are rising

First Published:

Water levels have been rising with all this rain and cities like St. Catharines are having to take extra precautions to guard against possible flooding. Beach volleyball may become water volleyball if the lake creeps any closer to Lakeside Park.

The boardwalk leading up to the Port Dalhousie light house is closed to foot traffic. The city has erected sand-bagged fences. There is a lot of water at Lakeside Park, but it’s not the most water the park has seen, even in the last couple of years.

Two years ago, Lakeside Park was lost under the lake. That year, the St. Catharines Game and Fish club had to build an extra ramp on top of their boat ramp, so boaters didn’t have to get wet while getting into the water.

The club kept the ramp after 2017, and needs it again now.

City workers have spent the day filling sandbags, in case they’re needed to preserve structures like the historic carousel at Lakeside Park.
