An Aeroflot flight from Russia to Thailand turned into a near-catastrophic event, when severe turbulence rattled the plane for several seconds.

Suddenly, without warning, the Boeing 777 began to shake violently and people were hurled up onto the roof of the plane and then back down again. Luggage as well as food from the trolleys was thrown all over the cabin. 27 people were hurt some of them had fractured or broken bones.

Most of the people injured were not buckled up, the fasten seat belt sign wasn’t on and when it’s not on many people feel they are safe.

According to former Air Force pilot David Rohrer, pilots can usually predict turbulence by checking for rapid pressure movements and looking out for certain type of clouds, but sometimes it can come out of nowhere.

“It’s a phenomenon called clear air turbulence. There’s no indication or very little to tip off an air crew that there is turbulence until they encounter it.”

That’s why David Rohrer says the best practise is just to leave your seatbelt on.

There are reports that a few of the injured passengers today were babies. Babies don’t get a proper seat or seatbelt just mom or dad to hang on to. Rohrer thinks it’s time to change that.

“We really should be looking at having special designated seats for babies. I know there’s a cost factor and that’s really been why we haven’t done it up to know but, the reality is what’s an infant’s life worth?”

After all, many people wouldn’t dream of letting their child in the car without a car seat.
