Victoria Day fireworks at Dundas Driving Park cancelled, fireworks portion moved to Labour Day long weekend

First Published:

The city of Hamilton says the annual Victoria Day Celebration & Fireworks at Dundas Driving Park have been cancelled this year.

The city says the fireworks portion of the event has now been moved to the Labour day long weekend and will take place on Sunday, September 4, at the Dundas Driving Park.

“In discussions with the City, the Rotary Club of Dundas Valley Sunrise decided due to ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on event planning, the Victoria Day Celebration and Fireworks would not take place in 2022,” said the city in a statement.

The city says it is planning a day of family-geared events and activities at Bayfront Park on Friday, July 1, 2022.

Hamilton recently reminded residents about new rules in regard to fireworks displays ahead of Victoria Day long weekend starting May 23.

The updated bylaw stipulates that fireworks can only be discharged on private property between dusk and 11:00 p.m. on Victoria Day and Canada Day, or the day after in the case of bad weather. Fireworks can also only be purchased seven days prior to the holidays.

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says the changes were made as a result of an increase in complaints for fireworks and people discharging fireworks in public spaces like parks and roadways.
