The APEC leaders summit wraps up, Sunday, in Lima, Peru.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among leaders from 20 other Asia and Pacific nations hoping to put a softer face on trade in order to counter rising anti-globalization sentiments.
A number of closed-door meetings being held today are a direct response to the anti-trade rhetoric that has increased after Brexit and following the election of Donald Trump in the U.S.
Much of the focus is on the president-elect’s vow to pull the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
In addition to the summit meetings, Trudeau is scheduled to have an informal session with outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama.
This is Obama’s last foreign tour which had a focus on reassuring countries that the U.S. democracy is still strong in the wake of Trump’s election.
Leaders in all regions across the world have expressed concern about Trump’s stances on immigration, trade and NATO among other issues.
