There are more questions than answers this morning after a Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down in eastern Ukraine.

All 298 people on board – including one Canadian – were killed.

The United Nations security council is holding an emergency meeting this morning as FBI and aviation investigators try to figure out what happened. U.S. intelligence says a surface to air missile downed the plane, but can’t confirm who fired it.

It was blown out of the sky over an area controlled by pro-russian separatists in eastern Ukraine close to the Russian border. Pro-Russia rebels claim to have recovered most of the black boxes from the plane.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak wants full access to the crash site. “We must and we will find out precisely what happened to this flight.”

Debris from the plane is scattered over an area said to cover more than 16 kilometres.

There’s word several passengers were world-renowned researchers, heading to an international AIDS conference in Australia.

The International AIDS Society has issued a statement expressing its grief over the news that several of its colleagues and friends were on board. Australian leaders say the passengers included the society’s former president and a well-known HIV researcher from the Netherlands.

The 20th International AIDS Conference starts Sunday.
