U.S. Iraq vet dies after roller coaster fall

First Published:

Officials at Darien Lake Theme Park Resort in New York state are investigating after an American army veteran died after being thrown from a roller coaster.

29-year-old James Thomas Hackemer fell from the “Ride of Steel” on Friday night. He had lost both legs in Iraq back in 2008 because of a roadside bomb. It’s not clear if Hackemer’s missing limbs were a factor in the fall – or if attendants had thought to prevent him from entering the ride.
The park’s website describes the “Ride of Steel” as reaching speeds in excess of 100 kilometres an hour. A spokesperson for the park would only say the incident is under investigation.
