It wasn’t the answer General Motors was looking for. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is forcing the automaker to recall and repair nearly six-million big pickup trucks and SUV’s around the world that have potentially dangerous Takata air bag inflators. GM claims the repairs will cost 1.2 billion dollars. Since 2016, GM has been petitioning the administration to avoid a recall claiming the inflators were safe on the road and in testing. They were up against vehicle owners who said GM was putting profits before safety in their arguments. 27 people have been killed worldwide by the exploding inflators, including 18 in the U.S.
