More than 3000 Indigenous children and youth died in residential schools right here in Canada. The head of the truth and reconciliation commission wound up a 6-year odyssey that chronicled the decades of suffering and tragedy in thousands of pages of testimony from victims of the residential school system.
That information may be shocking to some Candians who know nothing about the residential school system. Thousands died many of them buried in unmarked graves. Some survivors bravely took a stand and shared their horrific childhood stories with the truth and reconciliation commission.
Today a formal ceremony in Ottawa marking the delivery of the truth and reconciliation commission’s final report. The report details the dark history and legacy of Canadian residential schools. 150 000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children attended the schools, which existed for more than a century.
Justice Murray Sinclair, chair of the commission says, there could be as many as 6 000 students who died in residential schools.
The report also points out that government, churches and school officials were all aware of the poor health and safety conditions within the schools.
