A lot of unexpected upsets and victories as the Liberal vote kept rolling across the country last night, helping to move the third-placed party into first while putting a Trudeau back in 24 Sussex Drive.

“Our goal all along was to not only give Canadians a different government, but a better one.”

After a stunning majority victory Justin Trudeau had this message for his supporters. “This is what a positive hopeful vision and platform and team can make happen.”

And this one to those around the world who may have felt Canada lost its way during a decade of Conservative rule. “On behalf of 35 million Canadians, we’re back. Cheers.”

And so is Trudeaumania 2.0.

Just like his father in the 60’s, Justin Trudeau’s style and ease with Canadians is clearly connecting him and energizing the millions who voted for him. But scholars say while their styles are similar, their backgrounds are different.

“The elder Trudeau and the younger Trudeau are cut from two completely different sets of cloth. The older one has some intellectual gravitas. The younger one has the potential to grow into his job, but his background wasn’t as a constitutional lawyer, it’s as a highschool drama teacher.” said Political science professor Nelson Wiseman.

Sweeping to power taking 184 seats, Trudeau promised a better Canada for everyone. And as the red tide swept in from the east, there were some unexpected upsets and victories.  In Hamilton East- Stoney Creek, former Hamilton mayor and Liberal candidate Bob Bratina won the seat, defeating longtime NDP MP Wayne Marston.

There was another big upset in Burlington. Mike Wallace has held the seat for the conservatives since 2006 and he was defeated by Liberal Karina Gould. “It’s still sinking in.” said Wallace.

Now that the celebration is over Trudeau has work to do. At his first news conference late this afternoon, he told reporters he’ll name his cabinet November 4th and that’s when he’ll set a date to re-convene parliament.
