There was no getting around the truck inspection on Mountain Road in Grimsby this morning.

The inspection is a result of what happened at the bottom of Mountain Road in July, when a van with no brakes sideswiped a pickup. It then struck cargo truck and sent it smashing into an insurance company on the corner. Fortunately no one was hurt.

The Ministry of Transportation removed the plates from Ted Prowse’s van because his emergency brake wasn’t working.

“It’s just an emergency brake. It’s an automatic, I never use an emergency brake. It had a safety inspection not that long ago, I had no idea it didn’t work,” he says.

Now this painter is out some days of work and hundreds of dollars.

Police say each time they do one of these spot truck inspections around one-third of the vehicles have some sort of problem.

“Very often truck drivers who know their vehicle has some kind of mechanical defect will take the rural routes in Niagara region to avoid the inspectors at the Vineland Weigh Station on the QEW.”

Mechanics are one problem, insecure loads another.

“People just securing things on the trailer with rope which is not an appropriate way to secure things to a vehicle.”

A couple of years ago, a Niagara Falls man lost his legs below the knee when he stepped out into a live lane on the QEW, to retrieve a stove that fell off his trailer. He was pinned by another car.
