Independence a central theme in Greenland’s parliamentary election

Independence was a central theme in Greenland’s parliamentary elections Tuesday night.

The opposition centre-right party came out on top, after campaigning for Greenland’s sovereignty from ruling Denmark but also from the United States, as President Trump continues his threats to annex the island.

This was a upset victory for the centre-right democratic party, as the ruling democratic socialist party was expected to win again.

They’ve been in power, either through majority or coalitions, since 2009.

After wining 30 percent of the vote on election night, the democratic party must now form a coalition government.
