Toronto plans virtual memorial on second anniversary of van attack

First Published:

Toronto will remember the lives lost in the deadly van attack during a virtual commemoration on Thursday.

Alek Minassian drove a rented van down a busy sidewalk on April 23, 2018, killing 10 people and injuring 16 others, some critically.

The city has asked residents to avoid gathering or placing flowers at the memorial site and to follow physical distancing orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor John Tory was deliver a statement via YouTube and an online vigil is planning for Thursday evening.

Minassian’s trial has been delayed due to the pandemic. He told police he committed the attack for retribution against society after being shunned by women for years.

The judge overseeing the trial says it will turn on Minassian’s state of mind – not whether he carried out the attack.
