Ticats have quantity & quality at receiver

Tiger-Cats training camp continues at McMaster University and while we looked at the quarterbacks on Monday, we now focus on the guys who will be catching the passes thrown by Zach Collaros and crew. And the Ticat talent pool is deep.

Under Henry Burris, the Hamilton Ticats’ ranked at-or-near the top of every pass-related statistic in 2013. With Zach Collaros now at the helm, veteran receiver Bakari Grant feels like the tabbies can pick-up where they left-off — and perhaps improve: “You can tell he’s learning the plays and he’s comfortable back there and he’s slinging the ball. We ran 2 minute drills and it was flawless, so, I like it.”

Likewise, Collaros has been pleased with the targets he’s passing-to, and says the unit is quickly building chemistry both on and off the field. He’s connected with fellow new-kid-on-the-block, cary koch, several times this week. Resulting in oohs and ahhs from the fans in the stands.

Zach Collaros: “I think cary’s done a great job, it’s only his fourth day here and he can probably name every concept for ya, play whatever position you need him to play.”

Heading into his fifth CFL season, Koch has taken plenty of first team reps — which he considers a compliment, considering his competition: “We’re running 3 and 4 groups of receivers right now, and I haven’t been to a camp yet with this much talent.”

Greg Ellingson, Luke Tasker and Sam Giguere are few of the other notables in the Ticat arsenal. Head Coach Kent Austin says there’s still plenty of room for improvement among his receivers, but Andy Fantuz likes how well-prepared each of his teammates are: “We have weapons across the board, so it’s gonna be tough to cover us. If we can get on the same page and start clicking, we’re gonna be scary. A pretty powerful offense.”
