Thousands cheer Pope Francis

Updated He’s known as Pope Francis – and he’s making history.

The first Pope from Latin America – indeed, the first chosen outside of Europe. Known previously as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, he was born in Buenos Aires in 1936 and is one of five children in a middle-class family. He is 76 years old, and a respiratory illness when he was young left him with just one lung.

Thousands cheered in St Peter’s Basilica when the white smoke went wafting out just after 2 pm Hamilton time.

We have team coverage, starting with Nick Dixon in Rome.
