The Quest for Kindness: A new fundraising event to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s

First Published:

Want to do something nice this month? Join the Alzheimer Society in their Quest for Kindness.

They’re hoping we’ll make kind-nections throughout our community, to support people living in dementia.

Shawn Paron from the Alzheimer Society of Ontario joined us with ideas.

The Quest for Kindness is a new fundraising event that runs one month: January 1-29. You can register for a minimum of 30 acts of kindness and help raise $1 million for the Alzheimer Society to support crucial Alzheimer Society education, counselling and social recreation programs.

Paron says over 250,000 Ontarians are living with dementia and the number is expected to double in the next 20 years. Over 500,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia

Dementia and Alzheimer’s were listed on the death certificate of 42 per cent of the women and 33 per cent of the men in COVID-involved deaths in Canada.

Paron says the 30 acts of kindness can be as simple as holding a door open for somebody, sending a kind message, or helping out in your household.

She says the money is raised by getting people to sponsor you to do the 30 acts of kindness and ideally, they would join you.

“Something as simple as $5 toward your acts of kindness can go a long way,” said Paron.

She says the money will not only go toward people living with Alzheimer’s, but also their caregivers.
