Tenants demand answers

After calls to repair water damage, strong odours, black mold and bed bugs, neighbours living at 1220 Upper Wentworth in Hamilton are demanding action from the property manager, a company called DMS. One woman who lives in a 2 bedroom unit with her 5 children has been forced to sleep outside under a tent just to escape the bed bugs crawling in her apartment.

Layla Saddam lives with her 5 kids and her unit has been sprayed 6 times, but to this day she still finds bedbugs in her apartment. Living in a small infested unit, Layla made a tent on her porch to sleep at night. Layla has been asking to move for months and says DMS offered her another apartment but it wasn’t big enough. This isn’t the only issue here, Layla’s neighbours have concerns of their own.

Marie Claire Sezirahiga moved in 7 years ago and found black mold in her sons room. She took matters into her own hands, she ripped out the carpet in her apartment and installed brand new broadloom out of her own pocket.

Even after a report last week on CHCH exposing deplorable living conditions in the building, neighbours say nothing has been done. Pipes that were seen leaking from the hallway were covered up, with old water stained ceiling tiles.

DMS didn’t return phone calls today but said last week that this is a complicated story, they have been offering alternate housing for some people in the building as they prepare to fix the roof.
