Swimmer Penny Oleksiak makes Canadian Olympic history

First Published:

Canadian swimmer Penny Oleksiak has officially become Canada’s most decorated summer Olympian.

The 21-year-old won her second medal of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games by snagging a bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle.

The Toronto-native has now won six Olympic medals in her career so far.

Oleksiak still has to compete in the 100m freestyle and potentially three more relays — the women’s 4x200m freestyle as well as the women’s and mixed 4x100m medleys, the latter of which is being included on the Olympic program for the first time.

This is Oleksiak’s second Summer Games appearance. She had a breakout performance at Rio 2016 where she won four medals.

If she earns one more medal, she’ll surpass Cindy Klassen and Clara Hughes to become the nation’s most decorated Olympian of all time.
