On April 10, 2016 at approximately 8:00pm, emergency crews responded to 181 Jackson Street West after receiving reports of smoke coming from inside the building.

The Hamilton Fire Department confirmed the fire on the 17th floor inside a single apartment unit and proceeded to issue a multiple alarm response. The search and rescue team entered the apartment and located a 46 year old man inside. Firefighters began performing medical assistance on the man before turning him over to Hamilton Paramedics who transported the man to hospital. Unfortunately the man later succumbed to his injuries.

Initially the fire was deemed to be suspicious in nature requiring further investigation. As a result, the Homicide Unit was called in to continue the investigation just before midnight on Sunday.

As a result of the investigation, which included a post mortem exam on Monday April 11 and with consultation of Ontario Fire Marshall, the death has been deemed to be non-criminally suspicious in nature and police are not conducting a criminal investigation.

Damages are estimated at approximately $30,000. At this time there is no official cause for the fire.

Detectives from the Hamilton Police Criminal Investigation Branch are now attempting to notify the next of kin of the deceased man and have not been authorized to release any details about the man or his identity.
