Super Bowl XLVIII Trailer Roundup

First Published:

Super Bowl weekend – that one time of year when sitting around watching TV and eating a horrendously large amount of fried food is socially acceptable. Unfortunately, this year’s game didn’t really pack much of a punch, and living in Canada, we don’t get to see all of the entertaining commercials and exclusive movie trailer releases that get aired in the United States. We’ve got you covered, in the trailer department at least, with a roundup of the new trailers and TV spots for some of this year’s anticipated releases.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The marketing campaign for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been in high gear lately, even going as far as airing commercials promoting their Super Bowl commercial. But there wasn’t just a new TV spot lined up. A new trailer was also revealed that highlights the rogue gallery Spidey will face off against this time around. We get a bit more background on Jamie Foxx as Electro, plus some more shots of Paul Giamatti’s mechanical Rhino and a familiar looking figure on a glider. Odds are pretty good that it is Dane DeHaan donning the Green Goblin suit. We’ll see how his performance stacks up against James Franco’s from the last Spiderman trilogy. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

We got a double helping of Marvel trailers this weekend. The newest trailer for the next instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, was released and it gives us our first real look at Cap’s newest adversary. We also get to see more of his new, high-flying ally Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie. Scarlett Johansson returns as the Black Widow, and Robert Redford joins the franchise as Alexander Pierce, a senior leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. Winter Soldier is the first of two Marvel Studios releases this year, with Guardians of the Galaxy coming out this summerCaptain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

The Transformers franchise is turning a corner with its fourth film, leaving behind series mainstay Shia LaBeouf and pretty much every other cast member from the first three films. Michael Bay returns though for Transformers: Age of Extinction, which takes place four years after Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Mark Wahlberg stars as a mechanic who stumbles upon a strange artifact, bringing the Autobots and Decepticons to his doorstep (a pretty common concept in this series). The trailer gives us our first look at the Dinobots. Dinobots, dinosaurs, extinction, Age of Extinction – we see what you did there Mr. Bay. Transformers: Age of Extinction opens June 27.

Need For Speed

With Breaking Bad all wrapped up, it looks like Aaron Paul is focusing on his film career. You’ll be able to see him in an adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel A Long Way Down and Ridley Scott’s biblical epic Exodus, but his first release of 2014 is Need For Speed, based off of the popular series of racing video games. Paul plays a framed street racer who enters a cross country road race after getting out of prison. The racing genre has been dominated by the Fast and the Furious films for a while now, so it’s hard to predict how well this newcomer will be received. Need For Speed opens March 14.

Noah

Football is religion in some parts of the United States, so it’s fitting that there was a new commercial for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah. It seems like Russell Crowe does some of his best work in historical epics, and he looks right at home here. Crowe stars as the title biblical character who builds an Ark to survive the great flood. His A Beautiful Mind co-star Jennifer Connelly once again plays his wife, and the pair can also bee seen in Winter’s Tale which comes out on Valentine’s Day. Separation anxiety maybe? For Aronofsky, this is his first film since Black Swan, for which he received a Best Director Oscar nomination. Hard to say if he’ll get similar recognition for Noah, which opens March 28.

Draft Day

Just because the football season is over doesn’t mean fans have to wait for next season to get their fix. Draft Day, directed by Ivan Reitman, opens a full month ahead of this year’s actual NFL draft. The film stars Kevin Costner as the General Manager of the Cleveland Browns trying to get the number one pick in the draft. (We don’t follow sports much around here, but don’t the Browns usually have the number one pick?) There’s a pretty good supporting cast behind Costner including Jennifer Garner, Frank Langella, Chadwick Boseman, Sam Elliott, Terry Crews and Denis Leary. Draft Day opens April 11.

3 Days To Kill

You can never have too much Kevin Costner. We already saw him play spy games in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and next you can catch him in 3 Days To Kill. Costner plays a dying secret service agent who is offered an experimental cure for his illness in exchange for one last assignment. Joining Costner in this one are Amber Heard and Hailee Steinfeld. 3 Days to Kill opens February 21.

Muppets Most Wanted

Broncos fans were probably struggling to put on a happy face during the Super Bowl last night, but maybe this new Muppets Most Wanted trailer helped out a bit. There’s something really hilarious about hearing tweets read in a super serious, movie trailer voice. We can only imagine what ROTFLTIPMP stands for. Muppets Most Wanted opens March 31.
