Suarez-Noa murder trial continues

A Hamilton prosecutor says she doesn’t believe Haiden Suarez- Noa’s account of what happened on March 9th, 2013. That’s the night he killed his girlfriend Tania Cowell.
Suarez-Noa testified for 2 days in his own defense against second degree murder charges.

Suarez-Noa has been under cross examination and everything he has said since he went to police the day after Cowell was killed has been put under a microscope. The Crown Janet Booy found many examples of stories that changed as Suarez-Noa told them, and stories he told that just don’t make sense.

“Do you love your honey?”
“Yup i’m taking you to my country to meet my parents. You better keep me around.”
This is video that Haiden Suarez-Noa and Tania Cowell shot in Cuba in 2012. During the trip, their son Bailun was conceived. Suarez-Noa told a Hamilton jury he was surprised and upset when Cowell got pregnant because she was supposed to be on the pill. But in this video, the couple talk about having kids.

“If we have a little boy or girl I’m going to bring my kids to this very spot.”
“A little girl and a boy.”
“This very spot I’m going to bring my kids.”
“Uh, our kids. Technically. I have to make the kids, put them inside your belly, that’s all. Technically more my kids than yours.”

Court also heard a recording of Cowell telling baby Bailun he was planned. “Mommy always said, if I have kids in life that’s great. I’m already 36 years old. I wasn’t getting younger. Then daddy came and he said, I’m having babies no matter what. no matter what. And I was like, oh, ok.”

Suarez-Noa told the jury he snapped and stabbed Tania with a knife that happened to be in his hand, when she called him names and threatened to leave with the baby.

“I’m not looking for compassion from nobody. I know what I did. It was awful. I wish this didn’t happen but unfortunately it happened.”

The crown pointed out that although Suarez-Noa was emotional in parts of his testimony, he did not cry once in an interview the day after Cowell was killed.

Suarez-Noa looked directly at Cowell’s brother and his wife in court on Tuesday, and thanked them for raising his son, who is now 3 . But The Crown noted, Suarez did not, and never has, apologized for killing their sister.

The Crown says Suarez-Noa intended to kill Tania when he picked up that kitchen knife, and she said afterwards, Suarez-Noa’s first thought was to try to cover up the murder, and to take the baby and flee to Cuba. There is some evidence that suggests that scenario.

The Crown believes Suarez-Noa realized he wasn’t going to get out of the country with the baby or clean up all that bloody evidence, and that’s when he decided to go to police, 12 hours after Tania Cowell was killed.

The defense has another witness on the stand tomorrow, and it looks like the closing arguments will be on Monday. The jury has been told they’ll likely start deliberating on Tuesday.
