Street Racing incident claims innocent motorist

First Published:

We now know the identity of the twenty-five year old woman killed in Wednesday’s street racing incident.

Sara Hoang was a child-care worker in Downtown Hamilton, and her funeral was today.

Police have arrested two men who were involved in the crash, and say they were going twice the legal speed limit at the time.

Hoang was killed Wednesday afternoon on Queenston Road, after pulling out from the parking lot of Sam’s Queenston Bakery.

Police say she was driving a Toyota Yaris that was struck by this Mercedes C350 being driven more than twice the legal speed limit of 50 km/h.

The driver of that car is thirty-five year old Warren Lewis of Hamilton. He was arrested at the scene and charged with dangerous driving causing death, and failure to comply with probation.

The second driver, also of a Mercedes, was arrested over the weekend. Twenty-three year old Ahamd Sarosh Durani has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, and failing to remain at the scene of a crash.

Police believe alcohol was also a factor in the collision.

This is the first street racing death in the city since 2006, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t street racing in Hamilton.

Sara Hoang was a pre-school teacher at the Hamilton Early Learning Centre.

She was laid to rest this afternoon on Hamilton Mountain. A friend of the family spoke to us about how senseless her death was.

“A father shouldn’t have to stand next to his daughter on Fathers Day, on any day, and have to go through what they’re going through at this point in time.”

Police say there isn’t an organized street racing group, but there are plenty of stunt drivers. So far this year, there have been 31 stunt driving charges laid, which means the driver was going 51 kilometres over the speed limit.

Last year, on Highway 6 south, a driver was caught going 160 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
