Stay local and visit different sights from your favourite Netflix shows

First Published:

If you were one of the families whose holiday travel plans were dashed when the government brought in new rules earlier this month, you’re in good company.

Travel writer Heather Greenwood Davis had big plans for her family’s holiday season too, but cancelled those plans and thought of some fun local things to do instead.

If you are looking for something to do, Heather suggests looking at the site Netflix In Your Neighbourhood.  This new site highlights all the places in Canada where Netflix shows are filmed, including two shows that were shot in Hamilton.

If you have seen The Umbrella Academy you may have noticed a few different places in Hamilton such as Ottawa Street, Gore Park and Breezy Corners Family Restaurant.  If your haven’t seen the show yet, season 1 and 2 are on Netflix and season 3 is in the works.  So binge watch it, and then maybe check out a few of the places.

Another show that is on Netflix right now is Blown Away: Christmas.  Five fan favourites from Blown Away are back to compete in Christmas-themed challenges for the chance to win $10,000, and $10,000 was donated to a charity of the winner’s choice.  The show was filmed in a Hamilton warehouse, and although you can’t go there, you can try glass blowing at a few other places.  Head to Playing with Fire in Toronto or sign up for the Sheridan Glass program.

So although your plans to travel may be limited, there are still lots of options for things to do locally.  Just head to your couch to watch Netflix and then head outdoors for some fun.
