The man accused of killing 18-year old David Pereira two years ago watched a recording of his own confession in court today. The video was almost an hour long, and for most of it, Raleigh Stubbs was hunched over with his head down. Stubbs admitted to stabbing Pereira because he says the teenager and his friends beat him up earlier in the night.
Raleigh Stubbs is accused of first degree murder in the stabbing death of David Pereira near Hamilton’s Hess Village two years ago.

In the recorded police interview, the jury heard detective Troy Ashbaugh ask Stubbs what happened and why. Stubbs told the detective a group of men beat him up earlier in the evening. Stubbs says he called police for help but didn’t believe police did much about the assault. Stubbs says he took matters in to his own hands. He grabbed a knife his late father had given him and looked for the group of teenagers who beat him up. He admits he had the collapsible knife open and ready in his left hand. Stubbs says when Pereira appeared in front of him he aimed his knife towards him.

The detective repeatedly asked Stubbs if he was sure he stabbed the teenager who had assaulted him earlier in the evening outside Stubbs Market Street apartment. Stubbs said he never forgets a face. It was later determined by police that Stubbs and Pereira were involved in an earlier confrontation. They had fought about Stubbs interacting with girls who were in Pereira’s group.

When Detective Ashbaugh asked Stubbs how he felt about stabbing Pereira, Stubbs said he had no remorse and that he was protecting himself. Stubbs went on to say: “he just paid the price. And to tell you the truth, if someone came at me like that again I’d so the same thing.”

Stubbs had some support from his sister and one other man in the courtroom. Pereira’s family was also there listening to the video. In the interview, Stubbs bragged about how he knows how to use a knife and guns. Stubbs is out on bail right now. The trial resumes Friday.
