Solidarity blockade cleared, Highway 6 reopens in Caledonia: OPP

First Published:

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says a solidarity blockade on the Highway 6 bypass in Caledonia has been cleared.

The bypass was shut down last week by demonstrators who were protesting in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs who are against a pipeline through their territory in British Columbia. The blockade was set up by a group from Six Nations called 1492 Landback Lane following the arrest of a hereditary chief on the west coast.

A spokesperson for the group posted on Facebook Monday morning saying demonstrators have removed the blockade and the roadway is now in the hands of OPP and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

“Last year, our camp promised to answer any call to action. We know that our strength comes from unity. Putting differences aside and working together to push back against the colonial violence that Canada and police have used to divide our people so we can’t fight back,” wrote Skyler Williams. “We will keep showing up for our brothers and sisters across Turtle Island.”

A complete inspection of the road and bridges along the Highway 6 bypass was completed Monday and the bypass was reopened just before 11 a.m.
