Soldiers no longer working in Ontario long-term care homes

First Published:

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces brought in to help manage Ontario nursing homes will be returning home Friday.

They were first deployed in April to homes hit especially hard by COVID-19.

Nurses, medical technicians and other personnel were brought for support in seven homes in Toronto, Pickering, Brampton and Woodbridge.

In addition to providing relief to frontline workers, they helped with infection prevention and control and with cleaning and food preparation.

A report prepared by troops working in the homes detailed horrifying conditions, including allegations of neglect and failure to follow sound health protocols.

The report intensified calls to reform Ontario’s long-term care system.

Premier Doug Ford has promised an independent commission will study how seniors’ care is handled in the province.
