SIU investigating death of woman at Niagara Falls police station

First Published:

Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate the death of a woman at a police station in Niagara Falls.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a 24-year-old woman was arrested in the area of Kitchener St. and Slater Ave. around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

They say she was taken to the Niagara Regional Police Service station and placed in a cell.

The following day, the woman attended a bail hearing via telephone at 2 p.m. She was then brought back to her cell at the police station.

Around 4:50 p.m., the woman was found unresponsive.

The SIU says emergency crews were called to attend and the woman was pronounced dead.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The post-mortem is scheduled for Friday in Toronto.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
