The Ontario Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is investigating following an incident that lead to Niagara Regional Police officers shooting a man early Christmas morning.
Around 1:30 a.m. on the 25th, Hamilton Police notified Grimsby officers that a man who was involved in an earlier assault was in their area.
Around 2:50 a.m. Grimsby officers found the suspects car on St. Paul Street West and Vansickle Road in St. Catharines. Officers say there was an “interaction” with the man and he was shot by officers.
The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. They have invoked their mandate which means there will be no other information released on this incident until the investigation is concluded.
