SIU clears officer in death of man near Rainbow Bridge

First Published:

Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared a Niagara Parks Police Service officer in the death of a man near the Rainbow Bridge earlier this year.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers responded to an area under the bridge on Feb. 28 for reports of a 49-year-old man harassing pedestrians.

The man refused repeated requests to leave. The man then shot pepper spray at two officers and waved a knife. The man refused to drop the knife and one of the officers shot the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

SIU director Joseph Martino says the officer who shot the man acted accordingly. No charges will be laid.
