An event was held over the noon hour at Hamilton city hall to remember all of the murdered and missing aboriginal women across Canada.

Mayor Bob Bratina unveiled a memorial flag during the ceremony. The Sisters in Spirit committee of Hamilton is hoping it will raise awareness in the city and across the country.

As the push for a national inquiry for missing and murdered aboriginal women continues, organizers say this is a big step in the right direction; as does Hamilton Police special constable Kristen Tyrer.

“It’s very significant. It represents all of those women those daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters all of those women who are currently missing right now so it means a lot to have that flag raised in front of city hall here in Hamilton.”

“My sisters should not have to feel that they are part of a disposable population and the numbers of aboriginal women that are missing and murdered in Canada is climbing every day.”

Police chief Glenn De Caire used today’s ceremony to announce a new partnership between the police chiefs association and the Native Women’s Association of Canada. Sisters in Spirit vigils will be held across Canada on Saturday.
