Sailboats capsize near Burlington lift bridge sending kids into water

First Published:

Sailing students were rescued from the waters of Lake Ontario Tuesday morning after two boats capsized Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Hamilton police were patrolling the waters and noticed two small sailboats under the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge.

Officers noticed the boats were struggling to maintain control due to the heavy rain and strong winds.

The boats capsized, sending the 11 and 12-year-old sailing students into the water.

Police rescued the youths and brought them aboard the Marine Unit boat. The sailboats were towed back to LaSalle Marina in Burlington.

The youths were all wearing lifejackets and were uninjured.

“Thunderstorms develop quickly and create dangerous wind and wave conditions which can turn a day’s pleasure of boating into a frightening experience,” said Hamilton police in a news release. “Safety begins ashore with planning and training.”
