Safe Schools Review Panel releases interim report

First Published:

The long-awaited interim report on the Safe Schools Review Panel was presented Monday night in a virtual meeting of the Hamilton-Wentworth district school board.

The panel was set up following the stabbing death of 14-year-old Devan Selvey outside Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School last October at the hand of another teen who was also 14 at the time.

That teen is facing first-degree murder charges.

Over the last several months, more than 900 people have attended community consultations on the problem of school bullying.

The interim report found that generally, parents and students are looking for updated curriculum, increased funding and school evaluations to address the problem of bullying.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, some public consultation and panel only sessions were postponed until after schools re-open.

During this time the panel also plans to release a public online survey for students, staff and parents.

The final report will be presented in December.
