Rules of the water

Next week is boating safety week, it’s never too early to address the topic, especially with the May long weekend fast approaching.

Yesterday, two boaters washed up at the Burlington Golf and Country Club after their boat capsized. Later, around 3 am, four people were rescued in two separate incidents on Lake Erie and marine units in Port Colborne are still on the lookout for a person who vanished off Cresent Beach in Fort Erie. Despite all that, our lakes have never been safer.

Niagara Regional police say fatality numbers are down to three to five deaths per year but they want it at zero and this weekend they’ll be on patrol particularly for those who like to boat and booze. Boaters are not allowed booze on their vessel unless you have kitchen, washroom and bed. Police will also be looking to see if your boat is stocked for emergencies.

The Hamilton marine unit will also be out in full force this weekend to educate boaters and to enforce the law. Also to clarify, while it seems harmless you can’t have open alcohol on the water if you’re in a canoe or inflatable device.
