Robocop is a reboot of the popular cult classic from the 80s, this time starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in the title role made famous by Peter Weller. When Alex Murphy (Kinnaman), a police officer fighting the corruption in Detroit, is mortally wounded, he is taken by the robotics company Omnicorp and turned into a half-man, half-machine cop. Omnicorp and its industrious CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) will do anything to profit from the Robocop program, and all at Murphy’s expense. But they forget that the man in the machine has a mind of his own.
Instead of hiring a big name action director to bring Robocop back to the big screen, MGM looked to South America and brought in Brazilian director Jose Padilha who has seen great success in both documentary and feature films. Padilha directed Elite Squad and Elite Squad 2, the sequel winning Brazilian Academy Awards for Best Film, Director, and Script on the way to becoming Brazil’s highest grossing film of all time eclipsing James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar. Alongside Kinnaman and Keaton, Robocop stars Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, and Samuel L. Jackson.
