We caught up with Elisa Paloschi, the director of Reel Asian International Film Festival’s opening night film, Driving With Selvi.

The documentary follows South India’s first female taxi driver, Selvi, over ten years. The film begins with Selvi as a young woman who has just fled an abusive marriage. Learning to drive gives her more than a career, it gives her the ability to be self-sufficient in a world dominated by men. Over the years her life both on and off the road are drastically changed in this uplifting documentary about human spirit and perseverance.

Driving With Selvi plays at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto on November 5th at 7:30PM. Both Selvi and Paloschi will be attending the opening night gala presentation of the film, and partaking in a Q & A following the screening. Reel Asian runs from November 5 to 15 in Toronto and Markham. For more information and tickets, check out reelasian.com.
