The first day of fall is just 17 days away – a little more than two weeks. But this afternoon was the hottest this summer — prompting Environment Canada to issue a heat warning across Southern Ontario.

This is definitely surprising weather for September. We came very close to breaking a few records, one for hottest day of the year so far and the other, the hottest September 5th in Hamilton history since the current record set in 1971. Even though we were one degree shy of that, people were still making the most of the heat.

Even though it’s the end of summer – it was a scorcher of a day, temperatures came close to breaking the record for the hottest day of the year so far and people were out taking advantage of it, soaking up the sun.

“I’m just out on the boat today, enjoying the beautiful warm weather. We were in the water for a little bit and have come over to Hutch’s for some fish and chips.”

“We’re enjoying this last heat wave of the summer. And we’re here at Baranga’s, our favourite summer restaurant because we’re afraid that if it gets cold, it’ll close early. And we’ve been coming here twice a week all summer whenever the weather is nice.”

“I’ve been waiting for the hot weather all summer so I’m glad that it’s here. I’m trying to extend September as long as I can. I’m really enjoying it and we’ll take it when we can.”

And Environment Canada confirms that this summer was cooler than average.

Geoff Coulson, Environment Canada: “We tap into an air mass coming up from the American deep south on a fairly regular basis. That air mass is responsible for giving us heat waves. And, for whatever reason this summer, we didn’t tap into that air mass very often, if at all.”

For businesses that rely on weather, some like Hutch’s, say that the cooler summer was actually beneficial. When temperatures are hotter, people are less likely to sit outside and would rather go inside.

Down by the beach, there wasn’t too much activity on the boardwalk despite the heat. But over at Baranga’s — the restaurant was banking on its patio to draw in business.

Margarita Tsangarakis is the Owner of Baranga’s On The Beach: “We were down a little bit because of the cooler weather, but when we had good days, the patio was packed.”

And the good news? While we may not have had the hottest of summers – Environment Canada says we should be seeing warmer than average temperatures mid-September and beyond.
