Ramadan is the holiest month of the Muslim calendar. The religious festival began on Friday with Muslims around the world refraining from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.

Dozens of Muslim men and women of all ages in Hamilton arrived for afternoon prayers at the Mountain Mosque. Hamilton’s Muslim community has grown to more than 40,000 members.

Ramadan is considered to be a time of intense prayer and religious devotion. Many will recite the Qur’an before sunset and at the start of the evening feast. And many will donate money to charity to help feed those less fortunate.

Throughout the month there will be several activities and opportunities for anyone in the community to learn about the faith.

This year, Ramadan will conclude on June 24 with the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr the following day.
