Racism on the rise?

It’s been one week since Donald Trump’s victory and since then expressions of racial hatred and sexism have erupted on social media. And not just in the U.S. but on this side of the border too. A post by a Hamilton woman is gaining attention, after she alleges a man pointing at Trump’s face on a newspaper, told her “you all shouldn’t even be here, you’re murderers and killers, you’re running around killing everybody, I hope he gets rid of all of you”. This as dozens of signs posted in Toronto urged white people to act against multiculturalism.

“He is someone who gives them permission, they psychologically have permission to express these views, and many of them don’t think of it as racism.” Stefan Dolgert, Brock University.

Councillor Matthew Green says it’s important to talk about these racial incidents happening in Ontario. Green says he receives hate mail, but he remains optimistic.

“For anything that I’ve seen online, if there’s a few dozen bad comments, I’m seeing hundreds of people supporting what is just and what is right, so that gives me hope.”

Spreading hate in Canada is considered a criminal code offence, punishable by up to two years in jail.
