Queen Elizabeth II is now the longest-serving monarch in British history. Today, she passed the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, of 63 years and seven months.
As Brittany Gogo reports, there were several ceremonies to mark her historic achievement.

The 89 year old Queen marked the day with a business as usual attitude opening, a new train route along the Scottish borders. During the ceremony she thanked well-wishers for their kindness.

“I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness.”

Taking the throne at the age of just 25, she’s now served for 63 years and 7 months… surpassing the reign of her great great grandmother Queen Victoria. Queen Elizabeth has presided over six decades of British history and seen a dozen prime ministers come and go – from Winston Churchill to David Cameron, who paid tribute to her during a session of parliament. “Her majesty the Queen inspires us all with her incredible service, her dignified leadership, and the extraordinary grace with which she carries out her duties.”

There were also a number of ceremonies here to celebrate her historic moment, including one in Fort Erie. And at Memorial Park in Waterdown the Lieutenant Governor was there to unveil a “Queen’s bench”, marking some of the milestones during her reign.
